Eighteen months of care an attention have proved to be a great success and the trees are starting to look like rubber trees.

After the initial clearing of land and careful planting it just took a little fertilizer and water to get to this stage of growth.

Trimming the lower branches enables the nutrients to reach the upper parts of the tree which ensures a faster growth, once you can't reach the branches any more you don't need to trim them further. Simply a little fertilizer every few months to help strengthen the growth and a lot of sun is all that is needed from here on in.

It is great to finally see the straight lines that will in another four years provide a 20 + year crop of rubber.

New Mailing List

Sign up to our mailing list and we'll make sure you're the first to know about up and coming Thai events in the UK. Six years ago when I first used to call my friend in Thailand I was paying 96p a minute through our local telephone provider Kingston Communications. They probably still won't be far off that now! but that's what a local monopoly does for people. I soon learned about another provider called One Tel who I could get access to who would connect me for about 39p per minute. Being a bit nieve was quite happy with my 10 minute £3.90 phone calls and it took a while before I finally found 25p / 15p / 10p / 5p / calls and eventually 2p calls. When I found 1p I thought we would never find anything better - well we have now found half a pence per minute calls to Thailand.

Just call: 0844 2009898 and then listen to the prompt.

It's approximately 5919.32 miles, from London to Bangkok - and costs only half a pence a minute to call from a landline to a mobile. I can tallk to Thailand for 1 hour which would cost me the same as calling my brother in London for one minute. Fantastic - but shocking!
Did I say: it's approximately 5919.32 miles, from London to Bangkok - and costs only half a pence a minute to call from a landline to a mobile? It certainly wasn't the first choice as the distance and cost of getting there didn't make it one of the cheapest of the places we had shortlisted. One thing that was in it's favour though was that we knew a few people who had visited before and even some who had gone and never came back (through choice - nothing sinister) we decided to give it a try. After an 18 hour journey which included two 7 hour flights and a few hours in a taxi we finally arrived at our destination. From the moment we stepped out of the car the world changed into a happier place to be. The noise, the smells, the smiles, the whole frantic, chaotic, atmosphere that surrounded us was so exciting but at the same time strangely calming, it was all such a world apart from what any of us had known or had experienced before. You really did feel you had arrived somewhere which for the next 17 days could quite easily make you forget that the rest of the world existed.

The majority of Thai's you meet are so friendly, so amazingly helpful and welcoming. The individuals and the families that I met who seemed to have so little yet were so generous with what they had.

Eight years on I am now married to the girl I met on my first trip there and we now live in the UK and have our own family. Thailand is a wonderful country and it has completely changed my outlook on life as well as completely changing my life.

A New Life in the UK

There are many Thai's living in the UK who have moved here here due to marriage, education or to to find work. We eventually decided to go for Roon 600 which seemed be a popular, fast growing tree. Here you can follow the progress of the trees (woo hoo!) and we hope to give you some insight as to what's involved if you are thinking of a similar project. I'm sure someone might be interested - surely there will be someone! won't there? It was either rubber trees or a Tuk-Tuk and we didn't have the time to learn the bangkok A-Z or learn to drive one - so rubber it was.

We have initially planted 1000 saplings which are currently being carefully looked after by our relatives who live in Northern Thailand (Uttaradit - Banghok). Thanks Tavee and Somkoan. x

This could be a long blog bearing in mind that it does take around 5 to 6 years before you can start to see any return but with a 16 or 17 year productive lifespan from the trees you understand why it's worth the wait. We'll keep you updated on how we get on. We would love to hear from anyone who is currently farming rubber and we would welcome any advice you could give us info@tasteofthai.co.uk. We're sure you will share in our excitement when you see our pictures 'one year on' - we just hope they don't look the same!

Taste of Thai

Our Website
We have been working hard on our website and it seems to be slowly becoming a recognised site among the many links and contacts we have made with other websites across the world. We are based in the UK and initially set the site up to post a few pictures of our regular trips to Thailand but it has developed into a bit of a showcase for our favourite Thai links.
We don't profit from any of the links - they have just been gathered from our favourites over the past few years. The translators and dictionary are good and it's good to know we could call Thailand for 1p a minute - Cheaper than we can call the neighbors. We get a little revenue from the google ads though so please feel free to click as many as you like!! If the site helps you then that's great - it might introduce you to something you may not have come across otherwise - which is our only aim I guess. As we find more quality links we will add them to the site.
Shared via AddThis

Taste of Thai Blog

Thanks for visiting the new Taste of Thai blog.
We are currently working on our new blog area and we hope to be able to bring you regular updates.
